Back to auld claes and porridge and a relaxing day at home on Sunday after our long day travelling home the day before. I tidied my greenhouse in readyness for the bubble wrap going on, got the heater in as its to get much colder this week and saved some seeds from the eucomis.

It might be getting colder but the gardens are still full of colour and interest and will continue right through the year. With careful planning you can have plants in flower, evergreens and colourful stems so that even on the darkest winter days there will be something to give us joy, lift our spirits and remind us winter isn’t for ever (though in February I sometimes wonder!) I’ve written several blogs, a page on our website and of course we are always happy to give ideas on making your garden fabulous 365 days a year
I was in the nursery wrapping up tenders, draining the water system and wrapping the pumps, reconnecting after our holiday and enjoying a walk round the gardens in the beautiful sunny weather. I also did some organising for our pop up Christmas shops, but more on that in another post, got lots of exciting new things for the wee Christmas shop
PS, its to get very cold this week so make sure you have everything fleeced, bubble wrapped, heaters on, tenders under cover and a hot chocolate in hand
The week got colder as it went on, no escaping all the neglected household chores over the past months. The house is getting a deep clean, one room at a time, an opportunity to de clutter and catch up on podcasts. I'm also going through the cupboards using up excess packets food, so we now have seven boxes of green rissotto soup and butterbean and rice soup in the freezer, ideal for chilly winter days. We have returned to healthy eating after our holiday to shed some excess weight and build up health for winter.

I had a visit to Peebles High School on Tuesday afternoon to chat with one of the teachers about developing horticulture as a subject for some of the kids. He's really keen build on what he's started in the old school building but sadly is loosing the greenhouses and all the beds and storage they had when the old school gets demolished. It was great to get a tour of the new school and chat about what could be done to enhance the kids knowledge and introduction to plants and growing things.

| The threatened snow arrived on Tuesday night, falling fast. |
A beautiful sunny, snowy but very cold day today, some photos from my back garden

It’s that jingly, sparkly time of year… well, almost. (David
insists nothing Christmassy should happen before the 1st of December—bah
humbug!) But for us businesses, planning starts early, so I’m excited to share
that our Christmas shop is now open, complete with some gorgeous new treats. I
mean, who could possibly resist a felted Jack Russell tree ornament? I
certainly couldn’t! 😄
We’ll be hosting a Quercus Christmas Pop-Up Shop at
Whitmuir on Saturday 6th December,
in the hallway from 10am to 4pm. You’ll find my watercolour cards,
garden-themed baubles, bug hotels, new seed-bomb gifts, houseplants, cacti,
indoor pots, vouchers, and so much more—perfect presents for the gardener in
your life.
If there’s something from our wee shop or the nursery that
you’ve had your eye on, just send me a message and I’ll have it ready for you
to collect. (The link to the website page is in the first comment.)
David will also have a table featuring his debut novel Touchpaper,
available in both paperback and digital download. The sequel Wyrm Galder
is finished too, and we’re hoping copies will arrive in time for the
30th—fingers crossed!
A great excuse to come to Whitmuir and support the Whitmuir
Farm Shop, Reuse, Repair & Share Hub at Whitmuir and whitmuir cafe.

Another page form my painting journal, painted while we were away in Orkney. I've another couple of painting ideas from the islands I'd like to do, but since we got back I've been busy catching up in the house doing all the things that got ignored over 8 super busy months in the nursery
Anyway here's some things that caught my eye in Orkney
While David was away flying today, amongst other things, Maisie and I had a walk up past Tantah and then back down through spoon wood and Southpark woods
Most of the snow has gone overnight but thank goodness its warmer!
A wet and cold day here in the borders, so we took ourselves along to Abbotsford to visit the house. We've visited the gardens, grounds and cafe lots of times but never the inside of the house. Its a perfect time to visit as there were no crowds of tourists and the house is decorated for christmas. After a lovely lunch in the cafe we took Maisie for a walk along the river, thankfully the rain had stopped. Some shopping in Gala before heading home and yes christmas stuff was bought, so it begins
