Beautiful Northern lights, walks and autumn tasks in the garden

Another week closer to finishing up our 2026 season at the nursery and closer to getting a holiday. There is still plenty to do in the nursery and its a time of catching up on all the jobs we didn't have time for during the season.

Just under 2 weeks until we close for winter on Sunday 25th October until the beginning of March 2027 when we re-open for the 2027 season.
I will be back and forward to the nursery doing all those winter tasks, so if you wish to purchase plants or to ask advice, please email quercusgardenplants@gmail.com
Our AUTUMN SALE continues until the 25th and we still loads of bargains to be had which we need to sell so please do come along and help clear the sales tables. We still have bulbs for sale and all our usual plants on our stock list. Grasses and Asters are looking fabulous at the moment, have a walk round the gardens and be inspired for an autumn garden.
Hope to see you before the end of the month 🙂
Photo is of the autumn display I created last year and I think I've outdone myself! I can't see me beating this one lol, I loved putting together my 16th century Caravaggio inspired still life ❤

Last week we’ve had all the weathers and the temperature is falling, though some days have still been warm. The leaves are rapidly falling off the trees and the autumnal colours area really getting going now. We have been enjoying the asters, grasses and other autumn flowering plants in the nursery so don’t think your garden stops in September, keep it going all year round with wonderful autumn flowering plants and evergreens for winter colour.

We were focusing on garden jobs last week, all those necessary tweeks and improvements that we don’t have time for at other times of year. Isabel and I have planted new plants in spaces made by removing over enthusiastic plants or plants that just didn’t like where they were. We moved plants to where we hope they will do better and we’ve totally removed some thugs! This has allowed us to plant new to us plants and re-plant lost plants. We’ve also been doing some last minute potting and some propagation of plants that I think we will need more of. We’ve planted a selection of climbing and rambling roses on the far boundery fence, to soften the look of the fence, can’t wait to smell them all next summer. I can’t wait to see the difference all these jobs and plantings will make next spring and summer.

I’ve also put away the next level of tender plants as the night time temperature was low again on a couple of nights, they will be fine in the polytunnel with a covering of fleece if its gets really cold. The nets are on the ponds and the wee free library has been emptied for winter.

On Thursday night I was pleased to be asked to talk to the ladies at the Newlands SWI about getting the garden ready for winter. Lovely tea and cake and they bought lots of the bulbs I’d taken along.

Fiona was back in this weekend and it was great to see her after she was off ill last weekend. She got some cuttings of climbers done and lots more potting as well as all the usual chat and banter.

David was in on Sunday and we got the last of the strimming done, which I think is the first time we’e ever got it all done before we close for winter. The lower bank is always fairly easy and after we dug out doe big clumps of knapweed and birds  foot trefoil that are threatening to move the brick edge of the herb garden. All good maintenance jobs.

Remember there is only 10 more days until we close for winter, so if you want those plants you’ve been thinking of, or still want to get some great bargains in our sale or purchase some bulbs for spring then nows the time, Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm.

See you soon 😊

When Dan said he wanted to come and spend the day with us we decided to head east again and do another part of the Berwickshire Coastal path from St Abbs to Eyemouth. A walk of just under 4 miles, so not too long, but to be honest, I’m feeling so tired, it was just right. Lots of sea views, chat with the boy and a picnic with views over the high cliffs in the shelter of a wall and a gnarly hawthorn. Once we reached Eyemouth we had a wander along the harbour and caught the bus back to St Abbs. Coffee and cake at Ebbcarrs in St Abbs which is always great for coffee and cake, in the shelter of their courtyard before heading home for pizza for tea.
