September is proving to be a mixed month of weather so far, its still warm, but the mornings are cooler and we've had some rain. The leaves are changing and taking on their autumn hues and the grasses are coming into their own with the Miscanthus beginning to flower and the Molinias are looking fantastic. Our beautiful Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' in the woodland garden has brightened up the central border with its bright white flowers for a few weeks now and they are beginning to turn pink as they age, its stunning.

With the spring bulbs hopefully arriving this week, lots of autumn interest plants for sale and the gardens looking great, there's still plenty reasons to visit the nursery before we close in 45 days time (apparently!)
What plants do you look forward to seeing in autumn? From autumn foliage, autumn flowers to evergreens and autumn bulbs we have them all in the nursery for sale and in the gardens where you can see them growing. With lowering temperatures and shorter days the plants are beginning to take on their autumn glory. Here are some of the plants to look for when you visit this month.

especially on the apple mint and a ridiculous mouse dog.
Throwback Thursday – the wildflower banks
When we arrived on site in 2015 these banks were wild and woolly, full of creeping thistles, couch grass and lots of wild flowers which were smothered by successive years of the old foliage dying down on top of them. We quickly implemented a strimming schedule every year in autumn cutting then raking off all the strimmings.
This over the years has resulted in the banks being full of at least 42 species of wild flowers, spotted and marsh orchids, bulbs and wildlife. From cowslips in spring, through ragged robin, oxe eye daisies, campion, orchids and so much more to the grass seed heads in autumn.
We also sell many of the wildflowers we have growing from our own plants and seed. If you are looking to establish or add to a wildflower meadow or planting now is a great time to do this as the soil will still be warm for a couple of months yet and the plants can get settled in before winter.
5 simple ways to help your garden & nature We can all make small changes in our gardens that add up to a big difference — especially as our weather and growing conditions continue to change.
Here are 5 things we do in the nursery that you can try at home:
1. Collect waterUse a water butt, pond, trough or even a container to collect rainwater. We use a cattle trough to collect run-off and then use it to water our gardens and pots.
2. Mulch your bedsBark or homemade compost helps reduce evaporation, keep moisture in the soil and improve soil structure. It also means less watering!
3. Keep borders well planted Full borders help conserve moisture, reduce soil erosion and leave less room for weeds. A win-win!
4. Choose the right plantsPick plants that suit your soil and growing conditions. The right plant in the right place will be happier, healthier and need less extra watering or maintenance.
5. Plant for wildlifeEven a few insect-friendly plants can make a huge difference. Simple, single flowers are especially useful for bees and other pollinators. You don't need a dedicated wildlife garden — a few plants in your borders or pots can help.
Small changes really can make a big difference. 
What will you try in your garden?
Making the most of our RBGE membership Isabel and I booked tickets ages ago to get a preview of the newly renovated palm houses. The look amazing and it was great to be able to wander around enjoying the plants in the very shiny immaculate palm houses. A lovely lunch in the restaurant and a wander around the rest of the gardens, lots of chat on the bus there and back and around the gardens. A relaxing day off, just what was needed.
