Another two week instalment to keep up, no such thing as quietening down as we move through to the end of summer both in the nursery and at home. Much propagation, working through the stock list, evaluating and planning for next year and beyond. Now a days there is no such thing as a quiet season.

9 years ago the nursery gardens became a wedding venue as David and I got married on 11th August surrounded by our wonderful family and friends. A beautiful day in the wonderful Scottish summer weather (to be fair the drizzle started at the very end of the ceremony and only lasted a little while)
we've managed to put up with each other so far lol despite my plant obsession 
We had another great day at the Peebles Show again. It was great to chat to lots of our customers and potential new ones too. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our stand to say hello.
We enjoyed a wander round through the day and good to chat to Nadine at Pentland Aromatics and Kirsty at The Peeblean, Ewe-nique and Reese who is the gardener at Mertoun Gardens.
Huge thanks to Fiona and Isabel who got lots done and helped all our customers who visited the nursery today. I'm back in tomorrow getting on with all the propagation and many other jobs needing done.

I am sure most gardeners like me will be relieved to have some rain a couple of weekends ago and cooler temperatures to give us and the plants and ground a refresh and some much needed moisture. Here in the nursery its been another busy week and we finished the annual stock bed tidy, always a relief to get this huge job done, and many many plants have been potted along the way and sold too.
Isabel, after finishing the stock beds, weeded the excess shade plants stock beds behind the office so she could see where to put all the vincas she has potted. She also spent last Saturday pulling large orders for customers that are all going out over the next couple of weeks. All great work making the nursery more efficient and keeping up with everything.
Fiona spent Saturday potting lots of snow drop bulbs (there were hundreds!) so if you need snow drops next spring we are definitely the place to come and buy them and I don’t think Fiona wants to see snowdrops any time soon.
David and I had a great day chatting to people at our stand at the Peebles Show on Saturday, the weather stayed dry and it was as always an enjoyable working day out, spreading the word about Quercus and what we do at the nursery.
David is making progress with the tunnel paths which will make life much easier and safer for us all going in and out, he’s also finished the overflow stock beds through beside the tunnels, its all go! The best thing, most of this is using materials we had lying around, we are ever recycling whatever we can.
I’ve been getting on top of admin and doing lots of propagating and potting of new plants for next year and beyond and enjoying seeing all the butterflies, bees, hoverflies, teeny weeny froglets and all the other bugs and beasties we share the nursery and gardens with.

Catching up on August which is jogging past or should that be sprinting at an alarming rate! From birthdays (older but not necessarily wiser and more creeeky joints and memory loss) to time with family and friends. Enjoying my garden at home and in the nursery and trying to keep up with everything in and out of work and reaching that point in the season where our annual holiday is much needed but still a while to go (but it is booked), Elderly cat and ridiculous mouse dog, good food (too much) and beginning to plan the last major renovations of our wee house and a new book or two to read.

Isabel has put together her top 5 plant recommendations from the nursery sales area this week:
-Baptisia australis: It caught my attention because it reminded me of a plant which is prevalent at home in PR (Puerto Rico), Scaevola plumieri. However, Baptisia australis has lovely blue flowers and stays in a tight clump. Drought resistant, a great option for the changing climate of the UK.
-Luzula sylvatica 'Hohe Tatra' - interesting foliage, loves shade and has attractive lime in the spring to yellow in the summer color. Very useful in planting combination to brighten a dark area! I would chose it every month as one of my top faves...
- Sedums (Hylotelephiums) 'Bertrand Anderson' or populifolium: Great alternatives to the upright, top heavy varieties we know and love. Smaller, with more trailing habits, the more I see them used in the nursery, the more I appreciate them.
-Fothergilla major: What a shrub! It gives nice flowers in the spring, and deep green glossy leaves in the summer, that change to a lovely red before it goes dormant. I would say, grab it now before it starts displaying its autumn colors and everybody wants them.
-Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'George Davidson': I love a crocosmia, and this yellow, smaller (more manageable, non enthusiastic) variety is a great option if you have admired the 'Honey Angels' we have at the nursery. Flowering now, into autumn.
I had a great visit to Archerfield Walled Garden today. Kerry who is the head gardener there often comes to the nursery and we arranged to meet at Archerfield this morning for a walk round. It was great to visit and chat with a like minded gardener, doing very similar to what we are doing at Quercus in terms of wildlife, sustainability, planting and so on and see where our plants have been planted. A good visit and a nice lunch in the cafe.

Another day another garden to visit
Lovely to catch up with Ian today with an excellent lunch at Kailzie Gardens and then a wander around the gardens. Lots of colour and the glasshouses took me back in time to when I worked and studdied with the NTS.
