Spring Plants, all go in the nursery and a trip to Northumbria

As we enter the last week of March, not sure how that happened, I am working through the never ending nursery work. Its a busy time as we sort through the stock beds, pot new plants, labelling and keeping the propagation of new stock going. Its lovely to see all our regular customers returning and new customers finding us too and loving what we are doing here at Quercus. It always makes all the hard work worth it. Its not hard to ignore the weather isn't being very spring like, a brief moment of warmth and sunshine last week has gone and the low temperatures and rain is back.

We have lots of fabulous shrubs in the sales area at the moment. From short growing shrubs to tall ones, evergreens and deciduous, flowering or for fabulous stem colour, spring flowering, summer flowering and autumn foliage colour, there is sure to be a shrub to fit your garden. You can find them all listed on our tree and shrub page on our website.

I've been having a wee clear out in the office and all the items are now half price or less.
The Ladybird towers were £18.95 now £9.00, the string holders were £15.95 now £7.00 and the striped bag were £9.95 now £4.00. Once they are gone their gone, we won’t be stocking them again 😊 Come in and grab a wee bargain, a gift for you or someone who might love one of these.

One of the things we really care about in the nursery is giving our customers the right information and advice so they can buy the right plants for their garden. This helps give them confidence and enjoyment in their gardens. Books are also a great way of doing this which is why we have a few select books now stocked in our wee shop, some informative and some for gardening fun. I had a great time choosing books I hope our customers will want to buy, I will try not to be tempted myself 😃
We are also stockists of the wonderful Scotland Grows Magazine in paper form. A great read written by Scottish gardens for Scottish gardeners, so please do buy a copy when you visit.
We also stock Scotland's Gardens Scheme Guide book featuring all the amazing gardens open through the year in Scotland. If only I had time to visit them.
Not garden related but the tale does include a gardener who wields a hori hori knife….. is my wonderful husband David Dodds Author books Touchpaper and the sequel Wyrn Galdr (he is now working on book three). Sitting in the urban fantasy genre they are a wonderful blend of old tales, mythology and fantasy set in Edinurgh, but not the Edinburgh you think you know. Enter a parallel universe and join Drew on an adventure with fabulous characters along the way.

Its that time 🙂
Fiona filled up our wee library today. We have lots of new to us garden books thanks to donations from our lovely customers. Full of second hand gardening books that you can borrow, read then bring back or leave a donation for your book in our charity can or bring a gardening book to leave and swap for one in the wee library 📔
We've also got old journals from the Botanics, Hardy Plant Society and the Caley, free to take away and enjoy - I can't bear to throw them out but will be glad if another gardener enjoys reading them.
Its a great way of passing on gardening books we no longer want and recycling 🙂 and we can raise some money for charity. We collect for Breast cancer care in memory of my sister who died 9 years ago ❤

Last week it felt like winter had come back to stay, it was back to all the layers and chucking a fleece over the annual seedlings at night. Regardless our hardy customers have made the effort to visit which is much appreciated and the work continues with lots of potting and stock bed tidying. In between all that I’m doing some catch up propagation that we didn’t get done in autumn or has failed over winter and sorting through the herbs splitting, tidying and getting them ready to come into the sales area once the weather warms up, It’s a great job for the first hour and a half keeping warm in the tunnel. Some of the perennial seeds Fiona sowed a couple of weeks ago are germinating already, there’s going to be a lot of potting to do. I also sowed more perennial seeds this weekend directly into 9cm pots. This reduces the amount of work we have to do and the plants will be for sale much quicker. Its something we experimented with last year with specific varieties of plants and it worked really well. As quick as we are emptying tunnel 3, we are filling it back up again!

The sales area is full of fabulous plants, you may have seen my post about all the great shrubs we have in stock, earlier in the week. We have a few wee shop items reduced to half price to clear room for lovely new items in the wee shop. You can find them in the covered area. Our wee free garden book library is now open again for 2026 with lots of new to us second hand garden books to borrow, make a donation for or swap for one of your own.

I’m working through S’s now in the stock beds, there’s lots of potting this year as we were so busy last year, the beds are quite empty but good that we have all our propagated plants redy to come out to the stock beds. This year I’m also working on filling on the gaps of the information cards we have out in the stock beds, so you have all the information at hand to help make choices about which plants to buy.

I’ve also emptied and cleaned out the water plant sales area as the first lot of water plants arrive, yay. This will be a selection of marginals, oxygenators, pots, and compost.

Fiona spent Saturday filling up our garden book wee library, so its now open for the season. She also got all the cuttings sorted out ready for potting and some more seedlings potted, its all go.

Our days off this week were spent in beautiful Northumberland, one of our favourite places. This was David's Christmas present, a couple of days away here including a tour to see the Chillingham Wild cattle, which he's wanted to see for ages. You can read all about these great places in another blog all about them when I have time to write it.
