Finally we are open for our 2026 season

We've had all the weathers in the past week, rain, sleet, more snow, strong winds so it was good to get a couple of hours tidying in the front and back garden at home last week. The last time I was in my garden was between Christmas and new year and then its rained or snowed ever since. There's still lots to do but hopefully I’ll get back to days off once the nursery is open this weekend. There's lots of interest and colour appearing though which cheers me up on the way out to work in the am. I'm just glad no one can see the back garden, been too busy in the nursery garden.
and then there's my "assistant"

Last week in the nursery was all about getting the sales area ready for opening, taking in deliveries and getting all the last minute bits and pieces in place. We've been tidied and labeled all the plants and now the tables are overflowing with plants and it all looks very smart with lots of new things for this year.

Viola 'Konigan Charlotte'

Isabel got the two beds at the road side tidied and the containers around the front of the nursery so its all looking very smart as you approach the nursery and I've been cutting back all the woody material from last years growth in the stock beds to tidythem up a bit until we get the stock bed spring clean under way.

Wow, what a weekend ❤ At last the weekend arrived and we were open for 2026 after all the hard work of the past two months it was great to open the gates and see everyone again. The positive feed back and the welcome back from our regulars and new customers has been amazing over the weekend, thank you so so much for coming to visit this weekend and proving what we do here at Quercus is appreciated, loved and that we are doing the right thing with the gardens and nursery. It was great to chat to everyone and help them choose their plants.
But before all this it was all about filling up the sales area ready to open. This involves selecting the best plants for each table, tidying them, top dressing and labelling and then arranging them on the tables. We had shrubs, grasses, wildflowers, trees, climbers, fruit and the shade tunnel to fill so it’s a few days work.
Isabel has been using the work area in tunnel two, it’s the start of our first full year of having all our new tunnels on site, right behind the nursery and with a second under cover work space on site its going to make a huge difference and save so much time compared to going back and forward to the tunnels across in the farm.
The sun was out this week which makes everyone feel better, the days have been warmer even though there’s been a frost overnight, the birds are singing and the last of the deliveries have been received. We won’t mention the sudden appearance of snow the day before we opened! Luckily it mostly melted on Friday! It’s even been warm enough to have the tunnel doors open some days.
We had MT from Scotland Grows visit and deliver the new paper version of the Scotland grows magazine which you can buy from the nursery. It’s a fab read written by Scottish gardeners for Scottish gardeners. It was great to show her around the nursery and gardens and catch up.
Also this week I finished working through all our alpines, tidying, top dressing and feeding them and doing any propagation needed. They will be out for sale in the next week or two when its warm enough, but they certainly look smart in the poly tunnel. Fiona was potting some bare root plants for stock and then started sowing our annual seeds on Saturday and Isabel finished them on Sunday. Most of these get planted in the gardens for summer interest.
There is frog spawn in the wildlife pond which seems very early, hopefully it won’t get frosted too much.
Now the next big task starts - spring cleaning the stock beds, doing all the potting up and more propagation.
Lastly and absolutely by no means least a huge thanks to the Quercus team for getting the nursery and me to opening weekend ❤ I'm now looking forward to my first day off in three weeks, back on Wednesday to do it all again, see you then 🙂

Spring is springing in the garden at home

On Monday I was able to make a start on tidy some of the back garden

No such thing as a day off when you run your own business......on Tuesday I had a lovely afternoon doing a talk to the Peebles U3A about the nursery. Quite a few of my customers there and folk seemed to enjoy my ramblings, so all good. Its the biggest group I've spoken to, 53 people! Way out my comfort zone but I make myself do it as its good for business and me (apparently).
