What a way to start a new week with a fabulous show from the northern lights. Its been a life long hope to see them and I always thought I'd have to travel north to Iceland or Scandinavia to achieve that dream. But, because we're a living through a period of heightened activity on the sun and thus a peak in activity of the northern lights we've now seen them vividly from our own back garden here in the borders four times. I feel very lucky.

| The northern lights on Monday evening |
On Monday I got the first big nursery task finished -
weaving the willow fedge
Sowing seeds at home
Sorting out alpines while its raining
Now that the willow fedge is woven, its time to move onto the next big job.... or two. That is to get the nursery gardens tidied ready for spring. The bulbs are showing already so it needs done so soon so that we don't damage emerging shoots of bulbs and perennials. In tandem with this job is emptying compost heap no.3 so I can then turn the other two bins. The compost gets put onto the tidied borders as they are finished.
You can read more about my process for tidying the gardens after winter in this blog:

First page for January in my watercolour journal. Haven't shared any paintings for a while, working on some bigger projects when I find the time |
I mean I am no dedicated follower of fashion but winter in the nursery is definitely not glamourous
As another week comes to an end and another week closer to re-opening the task list is growing not shrinking, no surprises there! Spring flowers are appearing, cheering me up when the weather is rubbish.
What a wet wet couple of days the end of the week was, frustrating as I had hoped to finish tidying the woodland garden this week and get compost onto the tidied borders (thus also emptying compost bin 3), two birds and one stone and all that. But I am never one to waste time so I’ve got ahead with the dreaded admin, tidied and sorted more alpines ready for sale when we open and tidied and cleaned the office (I know desperate to keep out the rain lol)
But I can’t complain the beginning of the week was dry and not too shabby and I got the willow fedge weaving finished which is always a milestone at the beginning of the working year.
Fortunately Friday was slightly drier and I made progress in the woodland garden after all. Barrowing away all the leaves and old plant material up hill to the compost bin and bringing back barrows of compost. Determined to work off the winter excess and lack of excersise
I’ve also been potting up new plants and two new varieties of croscosmia which will be for sale later in the year.
So as another week finishes and I We can’t wait to open at the beginning of March and see you all again

It was great to get the woodland garden tidy finished today after three days of working through it as it’s the largest garden area in the nursery and with the most spring flowers and plants. This is the main reason to get it done sooner so the plants and flowers don’t get damaged as we are working around them. After lifting all the leaves and last year’s plant material it then gets a good mulch of compost from our own made compost so it helps empty compost bin 3 so I can then turn the other two. I reckon I barrowed between 50 to 60 barrows of compost to the woodland garden, thank goodness they were going down hill!
I also re did the willow edge to the raised bed in the centre. The woodland garden has many evergreen plants in it, including shrubs, coloured stems, ferns and perennials, it’s a great example of how to keep the garden interesting right through winter. The snowdrops are coming out, Rhododendron buds already opening and Hellebores starting to flower, its all go and doesn’t it look good.
