Beautiful spring, Prunus cerasifera pissardi 'Nigra' |
Spring is definitely upon us, the weather is unusually sunny and warm, guaranteed it will change for Easter ( I was right, its cold and wet now) We are in full stock bed tidy in the nursery, the plants are emerging, flowering and cheering us and the customers up. Watering is constant but with our upgraded and fixed water system there isn't the usual dry weather stress (thank you David <3 )
We are now fully stocked with water plants. Our water plant sales area looks amazing with such fabulous plants. We have:

Marginal plants

Oxygenators

Waterlilies in yellow, white, red and pink

Aquatic compost

Aquatic plant pots

Great advice
We also have all our perennials, grasses, trees, shrubs, herbs, alpines, climbers and so much more.
Compost, pots and lots of great items in our wee shop.
Open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm.
See you soon

Beautiful spring in the nursery and gardens
We've been super busy - thank you everyone who has visited in our first month of 2025, its been amazing
Pond plants are flying out
I was going to get the herbs out this week but the temperatures have been too cold at night, so hopefully next week, they are looking fantastic but I don't want to spoil them by getting frosted
But there is still a huge range of hardy tough plants to choose from, pots, compost, garden sundries and gifts
Open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm
Whitmuir cafe and farm shop open 7 days 9am to 4pm

What a busy week, well every week is busy here, but spring is busy busy. We’ve been super busy with customers which has been lovely to see the nursery full of folks enjoying a wander in the sun, buying plants and having a chat. We are not just a place to buy plants, we are a lovely, relaxing place to visit, a place to come together and enjoy gardening and plants, gain knowledge and have a chat with like minded people. It's also great to see Whitmuir busy, the cafe and the farm shop both and we are looking forward to visiting the re-use hub when it opens later in the year
Good food, cakes, coffee, recycling and a fabulous independent plant nursery, sounds a good day out to me
~ Water plants arrived on Wednesday and are leaving just as quickly, there will be lots of happy ponds, frogs and toads
~ Isabel again took on the challenge to get all the point of sale picture cards out into the stock beds this year. These are really helpful for customers especially before the plants do their thing
~ We’ve been potting up seedlings from the garden and dividing plants coming over from the farm tunnel to our new tunnel. Propagation never really stops. The annual seedlings are germinating and last years propagated plants are being potted up and put out into the stock beds. We are starting to fill up our second new tunnel and it doesn’t even have its cover on yet!
~ The gardens continue to burst into life and every day everything is a wee bit greener. Its exciting to see plants emerging, bigger than they were last year, that have survived winter, and the wee specials I have planted beginning to add interest to the gardens
~ The birds are nesting, I’ve seen Robin bopping about with bits of plant material in its beak in the sales area, I’m sure someone is nesting in the wee shop but not seen who it is yet and Blackbird is nesting in the stack of carry trays behind the office
~ The stock bed spring clean continues, Isabel has finished grasses (shade next) and I have just started P’s (there’s an awfy lot of those!)
~ The weather has been amazing, which is lovely but it does seem odd to have to be watering every day in April in Scotland. The cold nights do keep us on our toes though
~ We are also taking part in the Garden Organic Carlin pea project. Carlin peas - sometimes also known as brown, maple or pigeon peas are a great substitute for chickpeas – they have a similar nutty taste and are much easier to grow in this country. In most areas of the UK, they are a forgotten food, but you will still find them in specific regions such as Lancashire or Newcastle where they are eaten out of a cup, sprinkled with salt and vinegar. In fact they have a long history, dating back to the 12th century.
A glorious day off in the sun and those blue skies! Dan stayed over last night after coming to the nursery yesterday to get the garden railway ready for running this year. We had a relaxing morning while I watered the garden pots and David and Dan built the new garden table. We went for lunch at the café at Traquair house, now run by Val, food was great and it was lovely to be sitting outside in the warmth, dog friendly too, then a walk round the grounds and along the river. Home to sit and relax in the garden (yes I did) and enjoy our wee garden, not something I’m good at lol.

Blissful spring days! Here in southern Finland it's also incredibly dry for April, so odd. Tomorrow we should be getting a proper rain lasting all day. Looking at the weather map it seems impossible that the large rain front could miss even the small island where I live, which it often does.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to see some of the same plants flowering here as in your gardens, luckily we have a very early spring, it's been warm. What bliss.
So glad to hear you had a moment of relaxation in the midst of the spring rush.
