Stepping from Winter into Spring

As always at this time of year I fall behind with everything that is not in the nursery, hey ho. We have opened and huge thanks to everyone we were on target and got everything done, even the extra landscaping jobs. It has been lovely to see our regulars coming back to visit and lots of new visitors too. Its what all the hard work is about, offering customers a lovely garden to wander around and get inspiration and then to be able to buy tough hardy plants and get the right advice. But back to the blogs...

Its full on  while we get the last preparations for re-opening completed. The sales area tables are filling up in readiness for re-opening a week on Saturday, 8th March. This is the only photo I took today as the pressure is on to get everything ready and the weather was rubbish, all the rain, sleet and snow, oh yes winter isn't done with us, its not May yet.

I've updated the Conifer, Bamboo and Climber page and the herb and fruit page on our website 🙂

Fragrant Friday - Skimmia ‘Kew Green’ - a compact, dome-shaped shrub with dense clusters of fragrant, creamy-white flowers in early spring and aromatic, pointed, mid-green leaves. Perfect for illuminating a shady shrub border or woodland garden. Requiring little routine pruning, it's useful for pollinating female skimmias planted close by. H 1m S 1.5m. Plant it in amongst pale yellow or white daffodils for great spring contrast and colour.

It's been another busy week, well every week is busy for us lol! With the nursery re-opening deadline looming, never did 14 days feel so short. Who’s excited for us re-opening? I know we are looking forward to seeing our lovely customers and I’ll be excited once the tick list is complete on Friday night lol. We’ve a few new things in the gardens and nursery to show you and I’ll hopefully get a video done before Friday.

Anyhoo, this week, Isabel has been working on tidying up lots of our lovely plants grown here in the nursery to fill up the sales area. The tables are almost filled alongside new trees, shrubs, conifers and Heathers. Two new ranges of pots arrive on Monday and our final winter construction job will be completed when the last builders merchant delivery arrives on Tuesday. I got the last borders topped up with compost from our compost bins, so they look lovely and fresh as the new plant growth comes through. The Birches in the top terrace border got staked as they were developing a bit of a lean.  The wee shop is filled with lots of new ranges and our old favs too and my watercolour cards. We’ve been enjoying having the heiland coos as neighbours in the field behind us.

Today is our last Saturday of before our nursery opens for the 2025 season. I had a customer garden consultation in the east of the borders this morning, then we went to the coast to St Abbs village which for some reason I’ve never visited, despite being to that area many times. Any hoo, we had lunch in the café on the harbour which was lovely and then a walk along the cliffs to Coldingham Bay. A slow meander home through the borders enjoying the snowdrops everywhere along the road side and in woodlands.

  1. Sounds good! Well, not the sleet etc but as you say it's still early spring. I love the daffodil + skimmia combo.
Oh how lovely – I've been to St Abbs once with a walk to St Abb's Head and will never forget it. It is so pretty! What a perfect place.
