Bulbs, Beetroots and autumn tasks in the garden

Over the last couple of weeks I've been assessing the nursery gardens and making notes of plants needing moved, replaced or areas needing attention of some sort. Some are on the to do list and some I've done straight away like the checkerboard planting in the herb garden.

Some of these squares have become inundated with weeds and other plants, while some are easy to weed every month when the gardens get tidied, so needed removed completely and re-planting. This Oregano was over run with clover so I dug it all out and stripped the clumps of plants down then replanting them, it will take a wee while to knot back together but they should do better now.
I had my "helper" with me as you can see!

This is the time of year I have time to do all the extra jobs and so another task last week was to sort out the seasonal interest corner and freshen up the pots. Along with fresh compost I planted a collection of Tulips in each one in shades of white, pink and purple topped with some winter flowering pansies. The primulas that were in some pots are now in the sweet pea trough. The sweet peas had finished so I cut them all off and topped up with fresh compost and more of the same tulips as before. Looking forward to a fine tulip display next spring 🙂

Tulips to go in the pots

All done and much fresher

Some creative cookery on my day off this week. An Ottolenghi sticky chocolate loaf and The Roasting Tin Cook book beetroot and blue cheese tarts with salad and tomatoes from the farm shop at Whitmuir.

Autumn is coming, hurrah, I love Autumn.
The reed beds are taking on subtle autumn hues along the river bank

One of our orchids is flowering for the second time this year

I meant to do this much earlier in the year but there's been so much stress n other stuff going on, but I will tentatively introduce my painting cards to the nursery shop and see what happens next year.

In full card production mode... It's time to get them out there ☺️

Plants will do what plants want.............. a nice crop of honesty seedlings in the compost heap.......
Would they grow when sown in pots in the polytunnel?
Of course not, mother nature always has the last laugh.... or maybe not....
2 trays of seedlings now potted and in the polytunnel for winter 😃

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our Spring bulbs have arrived ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lots of new varieties and some old favs! We are doing our very popular pick and mix bulbs again this autumn. Buy as many or as few of each variety as you need. Enough to fill a small pot or a whole collection of pots or your borders. We have a selection of Narcissus, Tulips, Alliums, Crocus, Scilla, Iris, Camassia and so much more.
We still have a selection of plants with autumn colour, Asters just about to flower for autumn interest, dwarf conifers for evergreen winter interest and some lovely items in our wee shop, ideal as a gift for some one of yourself.
We're open 10am to 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
Whitmuir cafe and farm shop open 7 days, 10am to 4pm.
See you soon 🙂

Looking great in the nursery gardens this week ❤ autumn. The range of flowers and foliage that keep the gardens looking fab well into October and November. For those who are struggling to keep the colour and interest going, think about asters, heleniums, autumn foliage and stem colour. Why not visit the nursery for some inspiration and a lovely walk. We try to have as many as possible of the plants you see in the gardens for sale so you can purchase the ones that have caught your eye.

My cacti and succulents at home are packed away in the potting shed for winter, there are windows along one side so they still get plenty light. The heater and bubble wrap is on stand by for those cold nights which will be here soon. They've done well outside over summer despite the rain and cooler weather, some have done really well, bulking up and flowering.
