From Agricultural shows to the Lake District, its been a busy week

The best of the nursery gardens last week, blue skies certainly set off the gardens and plants even if only for aday before the rain came back in again. The weather has been dire and we are fed up as everyone else is. Not only doe it hinder work and sales, we need as much sunlight and sunshine as possible before winter comes back in to help us feel good, and it just isn't happening.

For those who like something a bit different, I have 2 speciman plants for sale.
The first is Abutilon x Suntense. A tall shrub best in a pot here where it can be moved undercover for winter. Though I have seen some survive outdoors all year in a very sheltered spot in Scotland. Producing large pale mauve flowers in summer and often all year round this tall plant is deciduous but I find mine keeps some leaves through winter in the heated greenhouse. H 3m, S 3m. It is in a 15 litre pot and is £25.00
The second is Callistemon pallidus which has yellow bottlebrush flowers. A striking evergreen plant which will need winter protection in a greenhouse, conservatory or poly tunnel in winter. This plant is a great size in a ceramic pot and is £40.00.

A great evening at the Peebles in Bloom awards in the Peebles Burgh Hall last Thursday evening. As a judge for two of the categories it was great to see all the winners receive their awards. There were 32 awards from over a hundred gardens entered this year. Thanks to Peebles Community Council for organising it all.

One of my favourite genus of plants are Epimediums, love, love, love them, you can tell I have 19 varieties in the nursery now 😄
They have stunning flowers in spring, grow in shade, have great leaf shapes and colour. The new leaves are often coloured as they come out and they have great autumn colour and are evergreen. An all round star plant.
We now have some of one of the rarer varieties Epimedium 'Zhushanense' available for sale, these are in 1 litre pots and a good chunky size.
The dark purple flowers of the Zhushan Fairy Wings are as gorgeous as they are rich, purple cups are accompanied by spurs whose knife-shaped centers are in the same shade. The margins and tops of each spur are sharply demarcated in lighter lavender-purple. The very large “spiders” on Epimedium zhushanense dangle from bronze-green wiry stems in May/June. From near Zhushan, Hubei Province, China, this is still quite rare and spectacular species in the trade. Morning sun, dappled to open shade in fertile, draining soil. Drought tolerant once established. H32cm, S 60cm.

In the front garden at home this week, definitely moving into late summer

Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus'

Lilium 'Black beauty'

Scabiosa caucasica 'Staffa'

We had a great day at the Peebles Show , despite the weather ☔
Great to chat to lots of folk and hand out leaflets. Thanks to Fiona for being at the nursery and every one who came and said hi at the show and shopped at the nursery.

A round up of another busy week here at Quercus and Peebles.
Busy August continues in and out of the nursery. This week I’ve been on my own, so at least I win all the arguments lol. I’ve been sorting out all the shade plants in the polytunnel after we moved them from our damaged tunnel last week.
I got everything ready for the Peebles Agricultural show where we have a stand every year. Its always a great day out for David and I, we sell plants, hand out leaflets and chat to folks including lots of our lovely customers. Our nursery dog has always come along for the day too, now Maisie takes up the reigns as show dog. David is bribed to help with bacon rolls for breakfast them burgers and chips for lunch, lol.
On Thursday evening I was at the Peebles in Bloom awards in the Peebles Burgh Hall. As a judge for two of the categories it was great to see all the winners receive their awards. There were 32 awards from over a hundred gardens entered this year.
We are fine tuning the nursery stock list, so I’ve been sorting out plants we will be discontinuing, this week it was box hedging and other bits and pieces. We’re also having a behind the scenes clear out, so if you are looking for plug trays, planstic bins or large pots, keep an eye out for our posts offering these.
Fiona was in the nursery on Saturday while David and I were at the show, she’s working through all the propagation and this week it was lots of sedum cuttings.
The gardens are still looking fabulous and I’m really happy to see our sunflowers have survived all the wind and rain. ‘Claret’ is my favourite variety, I love the dark flowers.

It being my birthday on the Monday and our wedding aniversary the week before we took ourselves away overnight on the Monday and Tuesday down to the south end of the Lake District. We Visited Levens Hall, Inglefield Plants and Abi and Tom's Garden Plants, all of which you can read about in an up coming blog. Here are a few highlights. We really needed some time off away and relaxing after a stressful few weeks.
