"Ruler of new beginnings, gates and doors ........

......... the first hour of the day, the first day of the month, and the first month of the year, the Roman god Janus gave January its name. He was pictured as two-headed (both heads bearded) and situated so that one head looked forward into the new year while the other took a retrospective view. Janus also presided over the temple of peace, where the doors were opened only during wartime. It was a place of safety, where new beginnings and new resolutions could be forged, just as the New Year is a time for new objectives and renewed commitments to long-term goals."

So lucky to have this commute to work every day. 15 minutes of beautiful scenery.
This was sunrise this morning ❤

Behind the scenes - A busy satisfying day on Monday. That's all the willow woven, all 300 odd feet if it yay. Now on with the millions of other jobs needing done.
We also had four pallets of trees and 2 of pots delivered. Thanks to David, George, Eve and Pheobe for helping get them all up the hill into the nursery. Team work at Whitmuir 💪💪💪 The trees are now on the website, with descriptions and prices and I am about to put the fruit trees on.
The trees are looking fab, all in 10 litre pots with some of my favourites included in the selection. Get in touch if you want to purchase any trees before we open in March.

The willow fedge weaving is finished

We have our usual bowls in stock again in three colours and three sizes. Blue, green and a lovely lilac colour in small £20, medium £40 and large £60. We also have these terracotta pots for the first time. They are a good size and £30.00 each. More pots coming soon.

Behind the scenes - the compost heaps. Well I am definitely working off the winter / Christmas excess this week. I managed to get both compost heaps turned today
💪💪💪 These are huge industrial things built by David to take all our garden waste and they do the job. They are 3 x 1 metre and about 1.2m high. The compost goes through a year in the bins, turned after 6 months. So the compost started last January is now in the third bin and will be used in the gardens this spring. Its lovely stuff again, great recycling and putting it all back in to the garden.
I'll be the dead thing on the sofa tonight medicating with wine and chocolate 🤣

Another busy day making the most of the good weather, armed with brush, barrow and rake I headed back to the bottom terrace to start tidying the gardens. Not sure what I was on but I got the topiary garden, winter garden AND Cornucopia garden done! Leaves lifted, plants cut back and general tidying done. It was lovely working in the sun and seeing that the plants I though might have suffered in that very cold spell before Christmas are looking good.
As you can see from the photos there is plenty of interest and colour in these gardens, a great example of how to continue colour in the garden all year round.

Fragrant Friday - Thymus 'Bressingham'
A lovely creeping thyme that forms a low evergreen carpet of grey-green leaves, studded with dusty-pink flowers in early summer. It does best in hot, sunny sites with good drainage. It can be used in between stepping stones and will tolerate light traffic. Flowers are attractive to butterflies and bees. H 5cm, S 30cm. See it in the herb garden in the nursery.

A lovely walk along the Tweed at Melrose and back through Gattonside then lunch at Eden Coffee House in Melrose. Dog friendly, great food and service. Carpet shopping and a wee bit gardening at home. Bulbs are growing and the spuggies are singing in the hedge
❤️
