Life in the Deep Freeze

Wednesday's walk, not too far, as David is feeling worse again and I'm feeling better than I have in the last two weeks! This flu is taking its time to go. Absolutely freezing, colder than previous days, when you feel your face nipping with the cold and it hurts to breath in. The river has even more ice, looking more canal like than river like! Amazing to see.

Seascape today, because we do love to be beside the seaside,
but possible not when its as cold as it is today!

I am hoping and praying that our plants are a wee bit insulated under the snow. With temps down to between -10 and -15 for days on end now, this can be fatal to even the hardiest of plants, especially those in pots where roots are much nearer the cold. Even in the tunnels at such low temps a few degrees of difference makes no difference 🙁 The snow and ice is pretty, but inconvenient and damaging.
On top of not getting any of the December nursery tasks done, its going to be a testing start to 2023. Some pictures of the nursery when I called in to see how it was doing.

The perennial page on our website is now updated for 2023. With many new additions across the whole plant list hopefully you will find something for your own garden. There are other pot sizes available for some and many plants not listed as we have limited numbers. If you are looking for something not on the list, please get in touch. I will be adding more in the spring once I know what other plants have come out of propagation and into the stock beds. It's exciting to see all those cuttings and seedlings sitting there waiting for spring.

That's the grasses page updated for 2023 on our website 🙂

On it today, that's the Tree and Shrub page on our website updated. This one is always a bit lean at this time of year but come March and April I will know what I'll have in stock for the season and will update the web page.

Today a line and wash humming bird, loved working with those amazing colours 💚💙

Our willow fedge weaving workshop is now available to book on our website by following the link below. Currently at time of publishing there are two spaces left. If there is enough demand I will run a second workshop, probably the Saturday after (21st)

You can also book our seed saving work shop and Border design workshop through the same link.

The timetable for our garden railway and two charity days are also on our website on the events page and our face book page for more info.

The Border Design workshop will cover the basics of planning and designing a border in your garden, including solving planting problems in your own garden so you can the most from your outdoor space. Bring photographs of the area you want to re-design. This event will cost £30 per person and is restricted to 4 places. Saturday 16th Septembr 2023, 1pm to 4pm

The Seed workshoo is a 2 hour workshop will look at collecting seed, drying them and sorting them out and then the best ways to store until ready to sow. This workshop costs £25  and is limited to 4 places. Saturday 7th October 2023, 1pm to 3pm

A lovely customer liked one of my paintings when she saw it on my Instagram account and asked if she could buy it as some cards. That's them now ready to be delivered
🙂

Something different today. I had some Mistletoe to deliver up by the High School then walked up Craigerne Lane and along the wee path behind the school to Frankscroft.

Another easy to make Christmas decoration I made today. All you need is a length of easily bent wire, some star anise, some ribbon and a glue gun. You can make the wire rings as big or wee as you like and vary how many times you wind it into a circle. Tie on a ribbon so you know where the top is and glue the star anise on and that is it 😊🎄

Sunflower to brighten the day 🙂

The sky this afternoon from Tweed Bridge. Popped up to the high street for coffee and cake at Coletmans, how civilised 😃

Wreath is up at last, had to wait until the foliage had defrosted enough to cut it. Lovely to have my own holly and ivy in my garden (feel a song coming on...) One of the reasons I knew the cottage was for us when we viewed it in May was it had mature ivy in the garden, I've always wanted a mature ivy plant, it's great for flower arranging with the flowers and seed heads. Thats nothing, I almost bought a house because it had my favourite tree in the garden, a copper beech.

Chocolate mint cup cake. It was all going ok until I over did the paper case shading, ugh. Win some lose some.

A trip to Abbotsford for their christmas fair, last of the Christmas presents bought, and wrapped when we got home. Lunch in their cafe and a walk around the woods. Still chilly but the snow is melting 😃

David and I would like to wish you the very best Christmas and hope you can spend precious time with loved ones.
Its been another interesting and busy year for Quercus and we appreciate very much all the love and support our customers have given us.
Take care, stay well and merry Christmas to one and all xx

  1. Looks lovely and the nursery is a real winter wonderland - but I understand your concern. Let's hope there are no plant losses.
    Merry Christmas to you all!

    1. Merry Christmas, hope it was a good one. I think we might have been lucky with plant loss in the very cold temperatures, not sure how, but not complaining! Three out of four water pumps to replace though, not good. Have a good new year when it arrives.
