"May, queen of blossoms, And fulfilling flowers,

With what pretty music Shall we charm the hours?

Wilt thou have pipe and reed, Blown in the open mead?

Or to the lute give heed In the green bowers."

-  Lord Edward Thurlow, To May

In the nursery work continues in the stock beds tidying and propagating. Sam has been busy doing cuttings and propagation and weeding the bottom terrace in preparation for our charity Sunday next week. She's great at attention to detail getting lots of seedlings out the borders. Not much chitter chatter from me this week, some stressful but hopefully if it works out exciting times behind the scenes at home.

Geranium

If you have been in the nursery the past week or so you might have noticed the mighty Rheum palmatum var. Tanguticum in the track border on the way up to the sales area. It is flowering for the first time this year and is making quite a show with it's architectural leaves and giant flowers. Massive ornamental ‘rhubarb’ with deeply cut leaves, flushed purple on both surfaces, and great plumes of pink, white or crimson flowers up to 1.8m high. Rich, moist soil in sun or light shade. H 2m, S 2m.
I've managed to get my hands on a few which are for now sale in the shade tunnel in the sales area in 2 litre pots. So if you have a shady spot with a bit of space to allow for the spread of the leaves this is definitely worth adding to your plant collection.

Who's excited for a new garden at Quercus? we are , we are 😄 David and Rory started clearing this area which will become our woodland garden and is this years big project.
After Rory strimmed all the nettles down he and David set about getting rid of all the willow stumps. Chopping, sawing and digging.
I can't wait until its ready to plant up, tho that is a long way off yet but unsurprisingly I've been collecting the plants for it for quite a while 😄
There are bridges and paths to build, perhaps a bench or two where you can sit in the dappled shade by the stream, enjoying the peace and tranquility of a wood.

I've never managed to grow lily of the valley before, planted it four years ago in the nursery gardens, thought it had died, wasn't surprised. It appeared again last year and even more so this year and has flowered! I picked 3 stems to bring home and the scent is gloriously delicate. Such a beautiful flower.

Anemone

A walk around Traquair on Monday morning while David was sleeping off a dawn survey. A day of catching up with all the laundry, ironing, cutting the grass and working through stuff to get rid of in the storage shed.
