Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;
God's in his Heaven—
All's right with the world!" -
Robert Browning, The Year's at the Spring
Prunus 'Kursar' is looking great on the lower terrace in the nursery gardens, with that blue sky as a back ground and the bees enjoying the flowers, a perfect tree for spring. A small deciduous tree
with a spreading habit. Leaves are coppery when young, turning deep orange in
autumn. Single vivid deep pink flowers 1.5cm in width are borne in profusion. H

Wednesday and another lovely sunny warm day here in the nursery. It was great to get an outdoor potting bench set up so I could pot up and do propagation in the sun. But shhhhhhh don't tell hubby I've commandeered his work bench or I'll be in serious trouble. Horticulture and plants are banned from the workshop area. Ha ha ha. I was working through more of the first stock bed, making progress. Rory was in and carried on with sowing the many many packets of perennial seeds and finished them in a day! Impressed.
Thursday and both Sam and Rory were working today. We took all the crates of seeds Rory sowed over to the poly tunnel and brought a couple of trolleys of plants back for potting. Sam started tidying the shrub stock beds and is making a great job, some shrubs into sales and plants topdressed and tidied. Rory spent the day potting up bare root shrubs, re-potted and propagated the scottish flame flower plants and brought the rose delivery up and sorted it into sales. In between all sorts of things and customers I got on with more of the stock beds.

Friday already, where does the week go? Team Quercus were all in again and busy busy. Sam was back in the shrub stock beds continuing on with tidying and Rory was in the polytunnel starting to pot up the cuttings that Fiona did last year. The polytunnel is beginning to fill up again. Space never lasts long in there lol. I was back in the stock beds, lots of new plant potted and more of the stock beds tidied.

What a great weekend, the weather was amazing, so warm and sunny. We were busy with customers both days and really enjoyed working in the sun both days. Trying to park the really stressful farm sale stuff and not let it impact getting out of my depression but its really not easy especially when things get unpleasant. We had lots of lovely customers visiting, lots of chat and I did get some work done. Lots of watering everywhere, more stock beds finished including finishing the first bed. The water plant sales pond emptied and cleaned out, refilled and ready for the water plant delivery which is due. I also paid my greenhouse some attention, tidying and giving it a good soaking before the cold weather next week. finished of the day on Sunday by finishing the first stock bed yay!

The gardens really are coming to life, set off against a blue sky, the glorious colours of spring sing along with the birdies in the hedge behind the nursery and the buzzards wheeling in the sky above.

Monday and my chill down day in the polytunnel, it never feels like a work day on a Monday as I get lots done in the polytunnel, spending a full day in there, potting, tidying, propagating, listening to pod casts.

Behind the scenes - spring is the time for sowing seeds. We grow a lot of new stock from seed and every year its just as exciting as all the previous years to see the seedlings emerging from the compost. I sowed all the annual seeds three weeks ago and they are looking really good and almost ready for potting.
Sam and Rory have been sowing the perennial seeds, all 250+ packets of them They are now in the polytunnel awaiting germination. Exciting times ahead........
Spring comes to the cottage, home, where i rarely spend any day light hours

Teaching Maisie to be city dog and lunch with Becky on Tuesday, nice to see all the spring colour in the city. Magnolias and cherry blossom were fab but I'm afraid the frost will get them this week.
Lavander fields - so so about this one, the background lavander isn't pale or subtle enough, they stand out too much |

Lovely cherry and magnolia blossoms indeed, hopefully they cope with the very cold spell! We've had several nights at -9 degrees, but now with rain and southwesterly it's a bit milder. It looks like it might get colder once more! So it's so far just snowdrops and winter aconite and the first crocuses here; I'm very much admiring your daffodils and primroses since they are yet to come. Cherry trees normally bloom on May here in Finland in any case.
ReplyDeleteI see the farm sale is not yet solved, I had hoped it would have and things could continue as before with your nursery. It really is not nice to be waiting and hoping, I'm keeping fingers crossed here too, hoping for the best!
Hi Saila, thanks for your lovely comment. We have such mixed weather at the moment, one day its -5C, the next 12C but still less rain that we would normally have. I reckon all our flowers are about two weeks ahead, which makes some much more susceptible to the frosts we are getting. We have news on the farm sale, it is in the process of being sold and I've met the new owner who loves what we are doing and definitely wants us to stay. So really good news, time to relax a bit. All the legal stuff still needs finalised but fingers crossed there is no hold ups. I havent said anything on social media as I don't want to get too excited in case something goes wrong :/
