I belong to several Horticultural societies. As well as supporting horticulture, gardens, sharing horticultural knowledge, preservation of plants and gardens and interaction with like minded people, these groups are a great resource of info for myself and the nursery.
The Hardy Plant Society
The Hardy Plant Society is a registered charity which encourages the growing and conservation of hardy herbaceous plants. These can be grown, studied and conserved in our own gardens and it’s a way of keeping rarer varieties in cultivation. This knowledge is shared with like minded gardeners, be they experts, beginners or somewhere in between. Many fine plants have been lost from cultivation and societies like this work hard to keep these plants in cultivation and available to their members and gardeners.
The Society journal |
As well as belonging to the society there are around 40 local and specialist groups with in the Hardy Plant Society. These focus on a particular plant group or growing conditions, arrange meetings, garden visits and plant sales. Information about these groups can be find on the Society website.
The Society's Seed Distribution Scheme is a great way of saving plants for future generations of gardeners, keeps rarer plants in cultivation and getting some unusual plants to add to your own plant collection. The seed list is released in late autumn and members can choose 20 packets of seeds for the cost of post and packing. You can also choose a bonus surprise 20 packets of seeds which will be chosen by the seed distribution folks. The seed list comprises over 2000 different varieties of rare, unusual and interesting seeds. I always get my 20 packets of seeds, and there is always so many interesting plants to choose from and an extra 20 surprise packets (plantaholic lol).
You can get old copies of the journal from our wee free garden book library when we are open.
