"Smoke hangs like haze over harvested fields........

...... The gold of stubble, the brown of turned earth

And you walk under the red light of fall

The scent of fallen apples, the dust of threshed grain

The sharp, gentle chill of fall.

Here as we move into the shadows of autumn

The night that brings the morning of spring Come to us,

Lord of Harvest Teach us to be thankful for the gifts you bring us ..."

Is anyone else's Hellebores flowering? This is one of my own selected seedlings which I've planted in the nursery gardens and its flowering away quite happily. Plants and people, all confused by the very varied weather of 2021!

Now is the time to make space in our covered areas, tunnels and greenhouses and work out where everything will go for winter. Last week I tidied my Auricula primulas and put them in what we call the wee tunnel. A very useful 2 bay length tunnel behind the office which gets used for over wintering plants and extra propagation in summer. The auricula primula don't need heat in winter but they don't like to be wet and cold either otherwise they start rotting off and deteriorating. They will be happy here with the occasional water over winter to keep them going.

Horticultural fleece has many uses in the garden. Now it appears its also good as an impromptu dog bed while working in the polytunnel.

There aren't as many apple this year (don't tell David his apple chutney will be rationed 😃 ) but the Medlar has plenty fruit on it. A curious plant which I've grown to a good sized tree in a couple of gardens, this one is doing equally well and worth it for the flowers alone. The crab apple is an unknown variety (lost label) so I planted ii in the corner of the orchard and its done brilliantly. The apple was already here when we arrived and has the most amazing red apples and has been re-named the snow white apple by a customer, you can see why

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our Bulbs have arrived at last ⭐️⭐️⭐️
We are doing our very popular pick and mix bulbs again this autumn. Buy as many or as few of each variety as you need. Enough to fill a small pot or a whole collection of pots or your borders. We have a selection of Narcissus, Tulips, Alliums, Crocus, Scilla, Fritallaria, Camassia and lots more.
We still have a selection of plants with autumn colour, Asters just about to flower for autumn interest, dwarf conifers for evergreen winter interest and some lovely items in our wee shop, ideal as a gift for some one of yourself.
We're open 10am to 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
Junkshopantiques is open every weekend, Friday to Sunday 10am to 4pm
See you soon 🙂
How much is that doggy in the window? ........ he's priceless 😂

Bulbs are in stock

The railway garden is the garden that keeps giving this year. Like the summer weather it has gone on and on being amazing. The Echinacea are still in full flower, the grasses have come into their own and now its time for the asters and Actaea to shine. So pleased with this garden 🙂 ❤

Monday and a pottering day at home catching up on domestic chores, cutting the grass and weeding the patio at the back of the cottage. A walk along the river and woods before David headed out to do bat stuff. Autumn really is here, the trees are rapidly taking on autumn hues, and lots of leaves falling already. The hot summer and early autumn has been lovely but it does bring on a quick leaf drop with some of the trees.

My orchid is producing more flowers, the second lot this year

We had a lovely day out on Tuesday driving down to Corbridge to visit the fabby shop RE which I’ve shopped online from before. Managed not to buy too much and its dog friendly so Bracken got to visit too. We had a wander around the village, which is lovely with lots of nice shops and an amazing bakery where we had to buy cheese scones and cakes then lunch at the The Angel of Corbridge Pub. Food was excellent as was the service and they are very dog friendly, with water bowl and biscuits brought to the table and as usual Bracken was made a fuss of. After lunch we wadled off for a walk along the River Tyne, past the Corbridge roman fort and back into the village. It was another hot day, 22C! A long but very enjoyable day out.

  1. Bracken makes everything look that much better. I didn't think to call horticultural fleece "cosy and comfortable" before but here we are :D The bulb display looks that much more efficient, the food seems tastier and the walks filled with interesting things to explore!
I love your photos and storytelling. Sad to hear you have fewer apples, here we have a very bountiful year. Too many, even.
