The earth laughs in flowers

I’m loving all the colour combinations coming together in the nursery gardens. Here are my favourites this week. This has ended up being a very flowery post lol but its lovely to be able to share the results of all our hard work. The gardens are looking fab and I'm enjoying seeing all my plans and ideas maturing and sometimes looking better than I'd hoped which is good.

Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation'

This week I've been working away in the shade stock beds, tidying, topdressing, weeding and propagation so many new plants! Watering is an issue and I find myself hoping for rain! Normally we are hoping for some lovely summer weather. But 4 weeks of no rain starts to affect our water supply in the nursery and watering can become tricky. It now needs to be spaced so the storage tanks can fill back up again before I water another area, this slows down how much can be watered in a day. Who said gardening was relaxing?

Aquilegia and hosta

Brunnera macrophylla and hosta

Chaerophyllum hirsutum 'Roseum' and
Corylus maxima 'Purpurea'

Matteuccia struthopteris

Ranunculus acris 'Citrinus' and Aquilegia

I can't stop photographing the stream garden, here are a few highlights

Astilboides tabularis

Gunnera manicata

Iris sibirica 'Persimmon'

On into the wildlife garden, all the Aquilegia are flowering along with other early summer flowerers including Geraniums and Cirsium. Waterlilies are flowering in the pond and the willow is starting to go upwards, it won’t be long until the wildlife garden becomes an enclosed secret garden.

Aquilegia 'Denim and Ice'

Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum'

Lychnis viscaria

Rosa spinosissima (Burnet Rose)

The railway garden is entering a full year of being planted up and I have to say it has done amazingly well considering the winter and spring we’ve had. I am really pleased with how quickly it has bulked up already and the planting combinations I put in are coming together

Allium cernuum

Aquilegia 'Volcano'

Astrantia major 'Buckland'

Astrantia major 'Buckland' and
Calamagrostis 'Avelanche'

Geum 'Lady Stratheden'

These lovely cone lanterns are perfect for evenings out in the garden. Burn a normal candle or a citronella candle to keep the beasties away. Hand made in a family run pottery they are £14.95 each, treat yourself or buy as a gift.

Midgies aren't usually a problem up here but today they are very bitey so I've made my own midgie repellent burner with some lemon balm, lavander and scented Pelargoniums.

Another fabulous
The Boozy Book Club box in the post today, happy days, treats for me. This month includes a cocktail from Herringbone, Darjeeling tea sponsored by Arumba Coffee, ice cube moulds in the shar of penguins and lots of other goodies including the cocktail recipe bookmark, a play list inspired by the book, gift card and a certificate for the penguin sponsored by the Boozie book club.

Staying in the railway garden, I’ve kept this group of photos to do a post on them themselves. I’m so pleased with this little grouping and the combination of colours which I have to admit was by luck and not planning. I planted them in this corner because they suited the conditions and they have come together perfectly, flowering at the same time in complimenting colours. Dactylorhiza hybrid, Astrantia 'Atomic Sunburst' and Geum rivale 'Leonard's Variety'.

A lovely meal out for David's birthday, great food and service as always at the Traquair Arms Hotel. No photos of the birthday boy as he gets more bah humbug about it all the older he gets šŸ˜ƒ tho we did present him with a birthday cake at lunch time, to which we got the rolling eyes, hey ho lol

Its always good to get lovely weather on our day off. After a breakfast of eggs benedict we headed further east in the borders to visit the garden at Bughtrig just outside Coldstream. Lots of lovely areas to explore, spires of Delphiniums, peaches in the glasshouse and a great clump of Dactylorhiza and they are dog friendly. We then went off in search of lunch which we found at The Hirsel, again somewhere new to me. Lovely to sit out in the sun eating lunch and they are dog friendly too. We explored the gallery and pottery, made some purchases and went for a walk around the lake. So peaceful walking in the sun, with the birds singing in the trees, the smell of freshly cut grass, a true summer feel good day, oh and hayfever! Home via Galashiels to explore the world of low fat dog food in Pets at home and Tesco! Spent more on Brackens food than we did on our lunch! But he ate all of his dinner and treats so that brilliant. A great day off, relaxing in the lovely weather.
