"The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May."

Brrrrrr, some one turned the heater in the sky off! It was much colder on Wednesday and I had to scrape the car windscreen when I headed off to the nursery. Winter ain't done with us yet! Back into jeans again instead of summer trousers and its nearly May! The weather was drizzly and cold but it did improve as the day went on. The rain over Monday night to Tuesday night was much needed and has helped water the nursery. Everything is looking refreshed and combined with the heat of last week plants are beginning to grow.

The sales area is now stuffed full of fab plants, here's whats looking good on the front seasonal tables this week. Lots of lovely shrubs, ferns, early flowering perennials and evergreen grasses.

Looking good in the native garden this week. The warm spell last week and the rain on Tuesday has freshened everything up and encouraged plants to start moving. The plants are also beginning to form a carpet of foliage which is what I wanted to achieve under the hedge and trees.

Anemone nemerosa, wood anemone

Betula pendula, Birch

Primroses

Viola riviana, dog violet

The Quercus Light Railway has some new buildings. You can see them when the railway is running next on the 16th of May from 2pm. The QLR is a 16mm narrow gauge garden railway which David and Daniel run through the summer. They run live steam and electric engines with lots of waggons and carriages.

This week in the nursery I am continuing to tidy the stock beds, propagating and potting whatever plants need either as I go. With the recent rain I have only had to water the tunnels and greenhouses, so one less job to do. In the poly tunnel I'm potting up the last of last years autumn cuttings and seeds sown last spring then I will get on with this years seedlings which are already sprouting quickly. The last of last years propagation in 9cm pots is out the tunnel and waiting in the holding bed to be potted and go into the stock beds and now I have some much needed space for all those potted seedlings.

Back to the stock beds after a week of doing other things in the nursery

David, Bracken and I would like to welcome a new member of staff to the Quercus team. Fiona will be propagating lots of lovely plants to keep stock levels up and generally helping out on the days she is in.

Fiona and I have known each other since we met as 16 years olds when we joined the National Trust for Scotland YTS scheme (several years ago 😃 ) and we've been friends ever since. Whilst I went to Threave School of Gardening, Fiona went to Auchencruive. Like myself she's had a varied career in horticulture and I'm delighted she's coming along to work with me at Quercus.

The photo was taken at David and I's wedding in 2017 when Fiona read out one of our poems. We like a laugh, plants and all things gardening.

Fiona, sorry, it was either this photo or one of us as awkward 17 year olds getting our end of YTS

The day I've been waiting for for so long, having all my boys and Natasha together and Betty too ❤ We'd hoped to go for a walk but the weather typically didn't play nice after all the sunny days we've had! But we made the best of the gazebo, heaters and hot soup. It was great to catch up in person, hear the much missed banter and be the butt of all their jokes, I wouldn't have it any other way ❤ happy mum xx
