Writing this blog after a week of being open again and some crazy low, bitterly cold temperatures. Its been an absolute joy to have the nursery open again and see lots of our customers coming back and lots of new customers too. To see them enjoying being out visiting somewhere different, enjoying a walk around the nursery gardens and making some purchases. its been lovely to catch up with folk and have a blether. Now we just need some spring warm weather.
The weather continues to be either very windy and cold or very cold, both damaging plants in different ways, so frustrating. I really look forward to some warm weather and so are the plants. Plants are sitting waiting to get on with growing in the gardens and nursery. A burst of warm weather will make all the difference. I was looking at photos of the nursery last year and am not surprised that plants are so behind given the amazing spring we had last year compared the on going winter weather of this year.
I've really missed the sea, I am happiest on top of a hill or walking on a beach, looking for treasures, taking photos under an endless sky. We got the perfect day for it too. A bonus of living in the borders hills and beaches! Bracken loves the beach too and we enjoyed a picnic in the sun and take away coffees, before heading home to another busy busy week.

Happy nursery owner, we are now open |
Water Plants are now in stock!
We have a great variety of waterlilies this year for various depths of water in pinks, red, yellows and whites.
A good range of marginals for wet soil and in the shallows of ponds and streams.
Water Hawthorn (Aponogeton distachyum)
There are four different types of oxygenators
Aquatic compost and pots
Athyrium filix femima |
We have some cracking ferns in the shade tunnel at the moment. I love ferns, especially at this time of year when they are unfurling. All that lush green growth ideal for shady places in the garden. This week my favourite is Dryopteris erythrosora with that coppery orange new growth, stunning!

Athyrium niponicum f metallicum |
Matteuccia struthopteris |
Osmunda regalis |
Has anyone seen Spring? Last seen a year ago when it outdid itself. This year it seems to be AWOL. We need spring back now, its essential for both us and our plants well being. We are bored with the endless cold, the endless cold wind, the frost, we need sun and warmth.
I locked up the nursery in a blizzard on Friday, a blizzard! its a proven fact that we are more likely to see snow at Easter than Christmas. Hmmmmmm.
More mad weather on Saturday We came over the hill into the Lamancha valley to find everything clothed in thick frost. It was frosty all the way over from home but nothing like this! It was very pretty but very inconvenient. Another cold day, brrrrrrrr. Nice in the sun when it was out but cold otherwise and more snow this afternoon!!!
Did you know we have our own Wee Free Garden Library in the nursery. Made from pallets and other recycled bits and bobs David built it two years ago. I filled it up today and had forgotten just how many great books there are waiting for a new home.
So it's quite simple;
Exchange - bring a garden book you no longer want and swap it for one in the wee library.
or
Donate - simply bring along gardening books you no longer want - great recycling!
or
Return - you don't have to swap or donate, you can borrow a book and bring it back once you've read it.
or take a book and make a donation in our charity can.
We collect for Breast cancer care in memory of my sister who died from Breast cancer 3 years ago
We've also got old journals from the Botanics, Hardy Plant Society and the Caley free to take away and enjoy - I can't bear to throw them out but will be glad if another gardener enjoys reading them.

Oh heavens what weather you've had! We had really cold northerly winds too a week ago but now it's been a blissful two days, the temperatures climbing to a whopping 16 degrees which is the normal in May, not April! I hope you get the spring back!
ReplyDeleteI agree you have terrific surroundings and luckily can escape to the seashore sometimes, it so refreshes the mind and body.
The library is such a great idea and a cute one too!
Hi Saila, its been challenging, now its warmer and we've had no rain for 3 weeks and everything is so dry, no rain forecast for the next 10 days either!
