"By all these lovely tokens September days are here................

.......... with summer's best of weather and autumn's best of cheer.

Helen Hunt Jackson, September, 1830 - 1885

Rain, rain and more rain

All I have to say is boats, webbed feet, rain, rain and more rain to start last week. A lot of working in the potting area trying to keep dry. Lots of propagation, potting and stock bulked up for next year. Its a never ending cycle of planning for future years and seasons. The poly tunnel is full already and I have so much still to propagate! Hoping for some dry days to let the ground dry out a bit, its very soggy on our wet clay soil.

Hosta 'Devon Green' and Dryopteris pinderi

If nothing else, the ferns are loving this wet weather, and Hostas too. In the shady planter collection the orange new leaf of Woodwardia unigemmata is eye catching. Hosta 'Devon Green is in full flower with it's small glossy green leaves and in the back ground is Adiantum aleuticum 'Imbricatum' and Dryopteris Pinderi

This gorgeous grass looks fab back lit by the late afternoon sun. It's the first time I've grown it and it's new on the stock list. Melica ciliata is a deciduous, perennial grass forming a spreading clump of stiff, narrow green or blue-green leaves. In late spring it produces upright or arching stems with flower spikes up to 15cm long made up of small, pale cream flowers with silky hairs. Plant in sun or partial shade and well drained soil. H 70cm. In a 9cm pot @ £3.50.

Something a bit more exotic from the greenhouse on a wet and miserable day! I've still got young plants of a selection of Pelargoniums from my collection available. Mainly scented or species varieties, if Pelargoniums are your thing.

Hints of autumn in the nursery gardens? I'm hoping for an Indian summer September to dry the ground out .... and my feet! Its definilty been cooler the past few days, but I'm not complaining, autumn is my favourite season 🍂🍁

Rosa rugosa rosehip

Solidago

The nursery and gardens are home to many many insects, bugs n beasties enjoying the varied plants we have growing.

My day off and it was another day of dry weather, yay. I enjoyed a wander round some of the shops in Innerleithen, got rid of a pile of stuff to the charity shop and started no.2 of my me plan, home for healthy lunch (part 1 is losing weight, 2lb so far) and then Bracken and I went a walk along to Kirkhouses and then up the track on the Southern upland way. We enjoyed a seat on the style at the top of the hill taking in the beautiful silence, still day and warmth of the sun before heading back down the hill to the cottage.

On Tuesday it was lunch and a walk round the gardens of Abbotsford House, home of Sir Walter Scott, more on our visit in another blog. The gardens were lovely, still with plenty colour. We had a walk down to the river and then lunch in the cafe and Bracken came too.

  1. Nice fruits & flower garden! Can I order trees online? Do you have strawberry plants for sale?

    1. Hi, thanks, the gardens have done very well this year. We don't do mail order and I do have a few strawberry plants left. We are open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, until the end of October.
