Snow is but a cloud away in February

It's true the weather in February is usually the worst of the year, especially here in Scotland, but to be honest I'm bored of it. I'm longing for spring, a hint of warmth, being able to wear fewer layers and just to feel more spring-like (me and the weather). In the nursery it feels very much like stop start, 3 steps forward and one back, you get my drift. I feel like I am not getting ahead, yet I must be as the gardens are slowly getting tidied and the willow is nearly finished being woven. We've had rain, sleet, snow, hail, very strong winds, flooding and ice but no sun! All that often in the space of half an hour! On a more postive note it does give me time to catch up on admin, emails, placing orders, planning and phone calls so all is not lost.

Colourful willow in the fedge

All the big borders on the way into the nursery and gardens are now tidied and it's amazing how many plants are beginning to show green or even a flower or two. Plants are always much slower up here to get to flowering, so they are much appreciated when they do appear.

I love when the gardens are tidied and ready for spring

Pulmonaria 'Blue Ensign'

This pair of Felco secateurs have been by my side for most of my life, all my working life, 32 years to be exact, I got them for my 18th birthday. They've proved more reliable and trust worthy than a lot of people who have passed through my life! They get used almost every day, all day. It just proves investing money in good tools is worth it. I've replaced the blade twice and the spring twice. They are a bit worn, the red covers on the handles is almost gone and the leather holster well worn but I love them. Tonight I stitched up as much of the holster as I could, hoping to prolong its life a little longer. Cobblers thread and a large needle did the trick. Will they last another 32 years?.............will I?

Trusty tools, before fixing

Sewn back together, not perfect but hopefully will prolong their life

The large border on the left as you walk up to the nursery,
 tidied and ready for spring

You can see all the border before tidying and after photos on our Facebook page, please do like our page and stay up to date with everything thats new and happening in the nursery and gardens

Photo bombed by hubby, can you spot him!

Iris 'Pauline'

While we're talking about weather, the weekend saw an incredible amount of rain fall and the whole of the Tweed valley was flooded., making an interesting journey back from the nursery at night. Glad we were in David's car.

My car wouldn't have got through this

I'm loving this river walk from the cottage, through birch trees
and along the not so babbling river at the moment!

Snowdrops in the wood behind the cottage

I ended up having an extra day off on the Wednesday due to snow, it had started the night before on our way back from doing some shopping, snowed on and off all night and then really snowed all afternoon. A day to catch up on admin, walk Bracken along the river and keep warm in front of the fire. It does make the cottage look pretty though.

Inconvenient the snow may be, but the cottage looks pretty

Glad to be inside looking out

The fire is on and hot chocolate made

We wrapped up, Bracken and I and did the river walk in the snow, the skies cleared, briefly, and we saw blue sky! A time to breath deeply, be thankful for what we have and feel relief that my Mother in law is no longer in pain and now at peace after two weeks of being sedated and slowly fading away. Its been a sad and difficult time,, indeed this year so far has had it's challenges. We wait tentatively to see what is next!
