Easter Sunday, beaches and BBQs

It's been amazing weather, I still can't believe the weather we are having this Easter weekend, usually it rains, is cold and or snows and is generally unpleasant. We had temperatures of 18C on Easter Sunday and it was sunny and clear all day. We decided to have an afternoon out and make the most of the weather. After we'd pried the teenagers and young adult out of bed at lunchtime and they'd eaten, we headed off for East Lothian. An hour later saw us at Yellowcraigs beach near Dirleton, mind you I think everyone else in East Lothian had had the same idea! We managed to get a parking space and walked the short distance to the beach. I'd never been to this one before it was David's recommendation), usually I head to Dunbar, where I spent a lot of childhood holidays visiting relatives.

The Bass Rock

As with many of the East Lothian beaches you get great views of the islands in the River Forth and it's estuary. We could see Fidra, The Bass Rock, May Island and Craigleith as well as the Fife coast to the north and Berwick Law to the East. There were boats and tankers making their way in and out of the river or moored in the bay opposite kirkcaldy in Fife. We kept telling the boys to get their shoes off and go paddling, yes it's cold but fine once used to it, they were reluctant until I went in, and then all but Ben followed. It was great, I love the sea and the beach, not to sunbathe, but to explore, photograph and search for beach treasure and rock pools. needless to say Bracken needed no encouragement to go into the sea. He loves the beach and with a ball to chase and retrieve from the waves he was in heaven.

Once we'd had enough of paddling we went and explored the rocks, there were plenty limpits, shells, seaweed and we spotted a hermit crab.

It was great to be by the sea again, once back at the car park we had ice creams from the van there, a nice treat to cool down. We decided since the weather was so good to pick up some BBQ food on the way home. As always Ben leapt into BBQ action, aided by David and we had dinner outside, the evening was still warm, better weather than we get a lot of the time in Scotland in summer!
